6 RESTAURANTS ROOTED IN HISTORY

Kalmar is a city with a long and exciting history. If you would like to enjoy a meal in one of the oldest buildings in town, here are a few hints about restaurants with plenty of historical flair.

  • Slottsrestaurangen can be found at the magnificent Kalmar Castle, dating back to the 12th century. The menu offers some Nordic flavours, with a focus on seasonal, locally produced ingredients. The café offers its own baked goods to guests with a sweet tooth.
  • Källaren Kronan is housed in the vaults beneath two of the oldest buildings on Kvarnholmen, both from the 1660s. The cellar has been painstakingly renovated in order to retain its historical character. This is the place to enjoy some expertly crafted meals, inspired by historical menus.
  • Rosenlundska Källaren is a restaurant and bar that can be found in the oldest stone building in Kalmar, dating from the 1650s. The menu offers some absolute classics, interlaced with new and exciting flavours. The ingredients are Swedish, and seasonal to the greatest extent possible.
  • Västerport Bar & Bistro is inside the old city wall built in the 17th century, and has, apart from the inviting venue inside the wall, a cosy outdoor patio. A majority of the selection here consists of products from local partners.
  • FF:s bar och ett litet kök is also housed inside the historical city wall, built in the 1600s. The venue has some really rad vaults, where vintage furniture and soft lighting lend a cosy and intimate atmosphere to the place. The menu offers classic pub fare inspired by various European cuisines.
  • Stufvenäs Gästgifveri south of Kalmar is located along Kalmarund. The main building dates from 1798 and was built by Carl Mannerskantz. The restaurant serves traditional and genuine food in a modern style. The menus are adapted to the season with a focus on Swedish and local ingredients.
