No matter where in Kalmar you might be, the sea is always close by. Below are some tips for both adventurous or peaceful activities, if you want to get the most out of the coastal town of Kalmar.

  • Paddle. Rent a canoe, a kayak or a SUP, and discover the city from the water! Choose whether you want to paddle through the canals past the popular attractions of Kalmar, or if you would like to enjoy some lovely scenery along the coastline outside the central city.
  • Swim. If you love swimming and watersports, Kalmar is your city. There are some gorgeous beaches both close to town and in the pleasant outdoor areas nearby. If you prefer indoor bathing, there is an adventure bath right in the middle of town.
  • Snorkel. Outside the Stensö Flundran beach, there is a snorkelling trail for anyone interested in discovering the underwater flora and fauna. Follow the buoys along the trail, and keep an eye out for the information signs about the local plants and animals.
  • Go fishing. Want to try your fishing luck? Along the Kalmar coastline, you don’t need a pemit when fishing with rod and reel. However, for rivers and inland lakes, you will need a fishing permit.
  • Try wakeboarding. If you have a need for speed, maybe wakeboarding might be just the thing for you. In May, the new Kalmar Wake Park was opened at Långviken, about 1.5 km south of central Kalmar.
  • Walk along the coast. Along the Kalmar coast are many nice walks. A favourite one is the Linnaeus trail, taking you past Old town, Kalmar Castle, some lovely parks and green areas, an idyllic harbour for pleasure craft, and the scenic Stensö peninsula, among other features.
  • Picnic by the sea. How about a picnic, accompanied by the sound of the waves? If this sounds like something for you, two locations near the city are Kattrumpan and the Kalmarsund park. At Stensö, about 2.5 kilometres south of central Kalmar, there are many great picnic spots with a view of the sea.
  • Catch the Öland ferry. From May to September, you can catch M/S Dessi, the local bike ferry, across to Öland. During the crossing, you get a view of Kalmar from the sea, and have the opportunity to catch the iconic Kalmar sign in a snapshot of your own.
  • Play beach volleyball. At Långviken, you can challenge your friends and family to a game of beach volleyball. Or why not beach soccer or basket ball, which have their own courses there? If the weather is warm, there is a beach right nearby, where you can go for a swim between games.
