6 tips for a day excursion from Kalmar
There is a lot to discover around Kalmar, whether you love nature or culture. Below are a few tips about places to go for the day.
- Discover the Öland nature and beaches. Why not discover the unique natural landscape of Öland, either by foot or by bike? One tip is the stark Alvar, a part of the Unesco World Heritage. Along the island are plenty of beaches where you can stop and rest.
- Visit the summer paradise of the royal family. Solliden Palace on Öland has been the summer paradise of the Swedish royal family for generations. Here, you can stroll through the lush park, visit exhibitions, and have a little something to eat in the café.
- Experience the Småland of Astrid Lindgren. In Vimmerby you will find Astrid Lindgren’s World, a theatre park where you can stroll around the storybook sets and meet characters such as Pippi Longstocking and Emil of Lönneberga. Right down the road you will find Näs, the childhood home of Astrid Lindgren. Nearby is also the Film village, where you can learn more about the making of the Astrid Lindgren movies.
- Meet the King of the Forest. Would you like to see some elks up close? Småland is among the top Swedish regions for elks, and there are several scenic elk parks where you can have a closer look at these majestic animals.
- Glass art tour. The Glass Kingdom has a wealth of glassworks and artists’ workshops, all with their own unique history and character. This is the place to buy art glass and see some skilled glass artists at work. In some locations, you can try your hand at glassblowing yourself.
- Explore the Öland keeps and castles. Öland has a wealth of historical and cultural heritage. The Eketorp fortress is just one of several forts you can visit. Borgholm castle is another place well worth a visit.
