In mid-August, all of Kalmar is caught up in the triathlon fever. This is where Sweden’s only full-distance Ironman Triathlon takes place. The event is praised by both participants and spectators – and the atmosphere is electric all week long.
It kicks off with a short-distance race on Wednesday, followed by a children’s running event two days later. Then on Saturday comes the highlight of the week: the ultimate endurance test – Ironman Kalmar – attracting both professionals and amateurs from all over the world. The 2,850 starting spots usually sell out quickly, and this year’s race will host triathletes from a total of 69 countries.
The Kalmar race has become hugely popular, thanks in no small part to the incredible crowd support. All along the course, the athletes are cheered on by enthusiastic spectators – from the early morning swim start until the finish line closes late at night. In fact, the race was recently named the Best Ironman Race in the World by the participants themselves. Could there be any higher praise?
The next Ironman Kalmar takes place on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
- Kalmar’s first triathlon was held in 1994, with 64 athletes at the starting line.
- Even back then, it was a full-distance race: 3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling, and 42.2 km running.
- In 2012, the event gained official Ironman status and became a qualifier for the World Championship in Hawaii.
- Since then, the race has been held annually – except during the pandemic years 2020 and 2021. In 2023, the race celebrated its 10th Ironman anniversary.
- In its first year as an Ironman event, the Kalmar race attracted 1,600 participants from various countries. Today, there are 2,850 spots.
- Several side events have developed over time. During the same week, the short-distance race 4:18:4 Kalmar and the Ironkids race also take place.
- The short-distance race includes 520 meters of swimming, 18 kilometers of cycling, and 4.2 kilometers of running.
- There are just over 40 full-distance Ironman races globally, and Ironman Kalmar is the only one in Sweden.
At the Athletes’ Choice Awards, the best Ironman races are honored in various categories – and it’s the participants themselves who cast the votes. In 2024, Kalmar took gold in three categories:
- Most recommended Ironman race
- Best run course
- Overall satisfaction with the event
