Meet the Sand Sculptors: Piotr Boron and Lucyna Kujawa
What happens when dreams meet sand? The Polish artist couple, Piotr Boron and Lucyna Kujawa, have the answer. Inspired by the nuances of language and a longing for sunny islands, they are set to create a sculpture that evokes thoughts of warmer climes – right in the heart of Kalmar. This year marks their second appearance at the festival.
How did you get started with sand sculpting?
– I (Piotr) began working with sand sculpting about ten years ago, when I got the chance to take part in a festival in Poland. After a few years, I suggested that Lucyna should join me – and since then, we have sculpted together.
What inspired the sketch for this year’s work?
– In Polish, there are two different words for the English word ‘dream’ – one refers to the dreams we have while sleeping, and the other to dreams in the sense of hopes or longing for something. We thought this was a beautiful distinction and decided to combine the two meanings in our sketch.
We wanted to capture the feeling of the intense dreams we experience in sleep, but also the dreams we carry in our waking life – those that are about the future, longing, and wishes.
For us, Tenerife is such a dream. In winter, we long to go there, and the island has become our family’s summer holiday destination. The hot climate, the power of the sea, the wildlife and vegetation on this volcanic island – all of it has inspired the sketch for Canary Dreams.

Sketch: Canary Dreams.
What are your hopes for the festival?
– That our sculpture will bring a bit of Tenerife feeling here to Kalmar – and that the weather will be really lovely!

In 2024, Piotr Boron and Lucyna Kujawa competed with the sculpture “Sleeping Lion”.
