Tips
- Kalmar was one of Sweden’s most important cities during the Middle Ages?
- as early as 1180, a watchtower was built on the site where Kalmar Castle stands today? Around the tower, a fortress was later constructed, which during the Middle Ages was Sweden’s most modern stronghold. Kalmar Castle acquired its present appearance in the 16th century, during the reign of the Vasa kings.
- the Kalmar Union was signed at Kalmar Castle in 1397? Sweden, Denmark and Norway were a united kingdom until 1523, when Sweden broke away and Gustav Vasa was elected king.
- the city centre of Kalmar has been relocated? It was initially situated by Kalmar Castle, in what is today known as the Old Town. In 1647, the city centre was moved to Kvarnholmen and surrounded by a city wall.
- large parts of the city wall have been preserved? In some sections, there are businesses operating; for example, you can find a glass studio, a pub, and a spa.
