5 small museums

Apart from the major venues, there are a number of smaller museums well worth a visit. Below are a few gems.

• Kalmar maritime museum is the place to be for anyone interested in shipping history. Here, you can find out more about the shipyard history of the 20th century, and have a closer look at maritime objects of various kinds.
• Rotundan is the small house next to the Tullbron bridge. Back in the day, it served as a tollbooth. Today, it houses Sweden’s smallest art gallery, open 24 hours.
• Bjursnäs Bicycle Museum is part of an art and recycling project where the bicycle takes centre stage. In the exhibition, you can follow the evolution of the bicycle's form and function throughout the 20th century, as well as visit a traditional bicycle workshop from the first half of the century.
• Kika in is located right nearby, facing the Vänort park. Inside the blue pavilion, created by architect Gilbert Magnusson, are exhibitions of various kinds.
• Tjorven Café och Museum is in Rockneby, north of Kalmar. Come and to see the cult cars manufactured at Kalmar Verkstad in the late 1960s. This is a good place for lunch or a coffee, and for checking out the ongoing restorations in the workshop.
