Outdoor and recreation areas

Looking for the perfect spot for an outing? Kalmar has many lovely outdoor and recreation areas, both in the middle of town and around the municipality. Below are a few suggestions, but you are bound to make some favourite discoveries of your own.

SKÄLBY

Skälby is a lush park area, and a favourite among people of all ages. It is home to Kalmar’s largest playground, and a 4H farm where you can meet farm animals such as horses, pigs, and rabbits. In addition there is an outdoor gym, a disc golf course, barbecue spots, a café and more.

Svinö

Svinö is located at the head of the Öland bridge, and is mostly covered in planted pine forest. There are several nice places to go for a swim out here, and some scenic paths for walking or running.

Stensö

Stensö is a peninsula in the southern part of Kalmar. It has popular beaches, and jogging tracks where you can enjoy a walk, a bike ride, or a run. Here is a snorkelling trail and an adventurous treetop obstacle course. Stensö has a camping ground and a brand new adventure golf course. Adjacent to Stensö is a charming fishing village with old boathouses and bustling boating life to enjoy.

central PARKs

The city park and the Kalmarsund park offer lovely green spaces in the middle of town, both for walks and for spreading out your picnic blanket. The city park is located right next to the castle, and has a very popular playground. The Kalmarsund park stretches all the way from the castle to Stensö, and has the longest jetty in Kalmar.

Kalmar Dämme

Kalmar Dämme lies a bit west of town. It is a man-made wetland park. Here, the water of the Törneby stream is purified before it reaches Kalmarsund. The park has a rich birdlife, and many attractive paths and outlooks.

Horsö and Värsnäs

The island of Horsö and the Värsnäs peninsula are in the northern parts of Kalmar. Together, they form a nature reserve with splendid opportunities for outdoor life. There are many forest paths in the area, as well as pastures and beach meadows rich in herbs. There are two beaches, and an illuminated jogging track.

Ljungbyholm and Krankelösa

In Ljungbyholm and Krankelösa, in the southern part of Kalmar, there are many nice places to visit along the Ljungby stream. The landscape displays great variety, and there are plenty of heritage sites. Among other things, there is some precious flora, and teeming bird life in the Prästgårdsängen nature reserve. Another popular recreational area is Krankelösaholm, where the spring flowers are something truly special.
